ASK ESSENTIAL SKILLS CUT
For this project, the brief from Schwarzkopf Professional’s education department was to create an all-inclusive package for teaching basic haircutting. It resulted in a seminar program including 15 step-by-step Videos, extensive trainer material, student handouts, including a glossary.

Schwarzkopf Professional owns multiple hairdressing academies worldwide. With ASK Basic Cut the idea was to set an international standard on how to approach basic haircutting techniques, for trainers worldwide.
The material had to fulfil different purposes: live during hands-on courses and at home or use in the salon, giving the students the opportunity to refresh their existing knowledge. Due to budget reasons, the videos had to be without voiceover as country implementation did not allow translations.
In a workshop situation with hairdressers and trainers we identified 3 groups of haircuts as examples. Then in thinking about the technical approach we identified 4 dimensions that would be reoccurring in the material. These were represented with icons due to the video format.
When it came to the videos, watching somebody executing a haircut has the potential to be extremely boring. With this in mind and aware that the videos were targeting a young user group, we introduced split-screen and fast forward sequences to shorten the videos and create tension.
The project took place in 2009 and due to it’s resounding success the material are still in use worldwide today.
Icons & colour code

The Icons were developed according to the 4 dimensions (Combing direction, angle, cutting line and sectioning) identified during the development stage in our the workshops with professionals have continued to be used across all subsequently teaching materials. To remove the necessary for translation and broaden the usage a color coding system was also included which proved particularly useful in the video material.
Update:
The project was created with technology available in 2009. I think 3D technology as it is available today could be a nice enhancement to the material. The animations in the videos could be made more elaborate and the graphic design of the icons could be re-worked and tested in advanced. Looking at some of the videos today, they could potentially sometimes be shortened even more.
Overall I think the material has aged extremely well, it still being in used today can be seen as a proof for that.
